The Torch of Liberty
Tony Rollo
You mention this Friday as an anniversary of Washington crossing the Delaware river. What a great moment to point to.
We are “spiritually” crossing the Delaware at this point in history.
Washington’s forces dwindled from a great number when they started to just a thousand or so hard-liners … a great number of them didn’t even have shoes. It was the dead of winter.
There were well equipped professional soldiers on the other side of the river that needed to be confronted. They were paid to be in service. Washington’s men were in it for their very lives, not for a paycheck …
Washington’s remaining soldiers in the Continental Army were very exhausted …. demoralized because so many fell by the wayside due to a lack of willingness to fight. I have read many historical accounts that called them “rag-tag”.
I remember like a blister on my mind an old black and white school film i saw in the 60s of their cloth wrapped feet leaving splotches of blood in the snow.
Yet those brave men had a reason more than what the paid professionals on the other side of the river had. They used their wits – they followed Washington at night in a snow and ice storm on Christmas night when they could be at home before a warm fire waiting to be defeated in comfort …
They took the enemy by surprise. BY SURPRISE!
They used more than their strength – they had little left.
They used more than their numbers – for they were greatly outnumbered.
They used what they had.
When the word spread of the victory, the people rallied and joined back in. The cause was reinvigorated.
Should we despise those people who went home yet joined back in when the tables turned to victory?
Should any group now despise another because one may have been organized long before the other?
We should welcome those who are now deciding and gently coax those who are hesitant. We should encourage those who fear.
We have a common cause of Liberty! Our common desire is freedom!
We can unite under Liberty’s torch. We can unite under the Constitution.
We cannot all be a Washington. We cannot all be a Patrick Henry. We cannot all be a Benjamin Franklin. We cannot all be a Betsy Ross.
We can be ourselves and do what we are best at while we all rally together under the light of Liberty’s torch. We are stronger in our different skills and talents.
There are those who are willing and able to stand in a crowd of fellow patriots and raise signs. Yet there is an artist who is unable to join the crowd physically, but who can make the signs they carry.
There are those who are gifted with words to encourage. But they lack the means to transmit those words. There are those who lack the words but can use a camera. Or run a printing press. Or can record sound. Or create a web site. Those people can unite to enable those words of encouragement to be sent to the public.
Let us rally under Liberty’s torch!
We all have our own piece of the puzzle – we simply need to find our place to fit to make the big picture.
Everyone has a part they play – Campaign For Liberty people, 912ers, Republicans, JBSers, Democrats, Conservatives, Beckers, Libertarians, military veterans, writers, film makers, public servants, pencil pushers, musicians, carpenters, police officers, doctors, painters, teachers, moms, dads, students, etc, etc, etc …
Let us rally under Liberty’s torch of freedom!
When Washington and his men crossed the Delaware, there were some on the paddles – some pushed away the ice from blocking the way – some kept watch – some were bailing water – some kept the powder dry – everyone did a different task that added to the victory at hand.
Let us rally under Liberty’s torch of freedom!
TPN is but one of the boats crossing the Delaware. We have many brothers and sisters in Liberty in other boats. We are crossing over together.
Let us rally under Liberty’s torch of freedom!
